An engineer can perform many different tasks for many different projects. From basic footers and foundations during a remodeling project to the more complex and intricate architectural skyscraper design, engineers set the pace for all construction and building methods in all trades. Engineers are typically subcontracted by architects to determine wind loads, uplift values, foundational support limitations or a myriad of other complex mathematic construction formulations that are predetermined by standardized methods. These methods are set up to keep a consistent and uniform building code that is up to modern standards and approved by all local, state and federal governments. An engineer has the final say over any building project—and total responsibility for the project if something goes wrong.

With such a huge burden resting upon strangers shoulders, you’ll want to be certain that they’re going to do the best job possible. That’s why doing a thorough background check on prospective engineers is a good idea when they are involved with your build project. Always ask your architect who they plan on hiring to engineer your blueprint and what certifications and credentials they possess. A qualified and professional architect will be happy to relay his engineer’s certifications and credentials to you for your approval. If not, it could be a sign that they’re not up to par.

While a college degree and credentials in an engineering firm may prove to be the proof that who you are hiring is a legitimate engineer, doesn’t mean that they are a firm who creates quality work and is someone you can depend on. Without a good portfolio chocked full of past work and a long list of happy and satisfied customers, an engineer might be breaking new ground on your project.

While everyone has to get their feet wet somewhere, it’s always in your best interest to keep in mind that a strong portfolio usually denotes a committed and well established organization. Always check at least three contactable references to ensure that the past work your prospective engineering company has performed was done affordably, professionally and without any problems whatsoever—and if there were, they were dealt with quickly and without any problems or costs to the consumer.
