Getting the Materials

Drywall delivery can be a tough project. With the help of a mechanical lift or crane, drywall can be unloaded by the bunk from the truck and delivered as close as possible to the site. The materials are then unloaded from the lift or crane two sheets at a time. Installers will stack sheets against one area in the house or building, and then move to other rooms as needed. This helps the installers to create a work station from which to cut from. Ceiling board is unloaded last as it is the first to be installed.

Hanging Sheetrock

Drywall - aka sheetrock - installation begins with the ceiling first. Also known as a “lid” the ceiling board differs from wallboard drywall. It is built with thicker paper and better compressed drywall board to compensate for the gravitational stress that is exerted upon the fasteners. Boards are installed one room at a time, installing the largest and least cut pieces first.

Once the ceiling board is in place, the wall board can then be attached. Tile backer board is installed around bathroom shower enclosures. Special sheetrock is used in covered outdoor locations.

Finishing Drywall

Once the sheetrock has been installed, it’s time to let the finishers do the work to close up all the seams and provide the sheetrock with a perfectly smooth surface that is ready for paint. Drywall is finished in successive coats with sanding in between each phase. The first phase is a taping session that fills seams and nail holes. The second phase is a top or smooth coat. The third coat is either a final smooth coat or a texture. Textured drywall uses a mechanical sprayer to create a textured effect on the drywall. Texturing is typically done by another crew or subcontractor.
